Applying to the Department of Art at the University of Delaware

Any student seeking to major in any discipline in the Department of Art at the University of Delaware must submit a portfolio of creative work and a written essay to be evaluated by the Department Admissions Committee (DAC). This is in addition to your application to the University of Delaware.

Overview of events

1. Upon receipt of an application form, the University of Delaware Office of Admissions responds to all applicants to the Department of Art with a letter outlining the portfolio and essay requirements for admission to the department.
2. Applicant submits the portfolio and essay to the DAC according to the instructions stated on this website. Portfolios and essays must be uploaded by:

Freshman candidates: January 15 by midnight.

Transfer candidates, (i.e. students from another institution and those from the University of Delaware): November 1 for students seeking Spring Transfer Admission or May 1 for students seeking Fall Transfer Admission.

3. During the DAC review, applicant's portfolios are ranked into three categories:

1. Admissible*
2. Not admissible
3. Wait-listed (Applicant’s portfolio will be reevaluated against new applications at a subsequent date)

* Please note that a positive evaluation from the DAC is not a guarantee of admission. Students majoring in the Department of Art must also meet the academic requirements for admission to the University. In the event of a negative evaluation from the DAC, students who are academically admissible may be offered an alternative major by the Office of Admissions.

4. The DAC will notify the University's Admissions office of its ranking and the applicants will be notified of their admission to the University and the Department of Art by the University's Admissions Office.

Choosing a major once you are admittted to the department

The Department of Art is listed as FAVI on the choice of majors on the Application. This indicates that a student is enrolled as a BA Art student in the Foundations program. Students are not admitted directly into a BFA Degree program as Freshman.

The Department of Art offers the following undergraduate degrees:

• Bachelor of Art
• Bachelor of Fine Arts in Studio Arts
• Bachelor of Fine Arts in Visual Communications

Scholarship eligibility

Based on the evaluation of portfolios, academic record, and/or financial need, a select number of students will be chosen for consideration for departmental and/or university scholarships.

Original portfolios

The DAC will not evaluate original portfolios. Portfolio reviews are not conducted in-person; rather, portfolios are submitted through the process described on this website. We do, however, encourage students to visit the University of Delaware campus during an open house. Please visit Office of Admissions for more information.
